Microsoft Flight Simulator is one of the longest-running PC video game series of all time.
#FSX GOLD EDITION VS STEAM EDITION SOFTWARE#
At 39 years old, it is the longest-running software product line for Microsoft, predating Windows by three years. It was an early product in the Microsoft application portfolio and differed significantly from Microsoft's other software, which was largely business-oriented. It is one of the longest-running, best-known, and most comprehensive home flight simulator programs on the market. Microsoft Flight Simulator (often abbreviated as MSFS, MFS or FS) is a series of amateur flight simulator programs for Microsoft Windows operating systems, and earlier for MS-DOS and Classic Mac OS. FSX remains the same.DOS, Classic Mac OS, PC-98, Windows, Xbox Series X/S

Nowhere has Dovetail announced they will allow commercial 3rd party developers to sell content for their future games.Īs developers, all we know concerning the future: Dovetail is going to make flying games using Microsoft flightsim technologies, and we might be able to continue as developers for those future products. Nowhere has Dovetail announced they will allow addons or develop future SDKs or APIs for future flight games (or flight simulators) they develop. But nowhere has either Microsoft or Dovetail announced a continuation of the MSFS series by Dovetail. so addons should continue to work and be a source of income for commercial 3rd party developers (concerning FSX).ĭovetail has licensed flightsim technology from Microsoft in order to create new flight simulators or games involving flying.

Apparently, this means they will not manipulate the FSX code to accept only authorized DLC from Dovetail (via Steam).
#FSX GOLD EDITION VS STEAM EDITION PATCH#
Nowhere has it been stated Dovetail has distribution or development rights to Flight.ĭovetail only owns the distribution rights to only FSX:Gold (as far as anything I have read from Microsoft or Dovetail), and can patch the product to eliminate bugs or non-working elements (such as malfunctioning multiplayer).

Nowhere has Microsoft or Dovetail stated it is reviving Flight. Flight is abandonware (unless Microsoft decides to revive the game). It is a flying game that uses MSFS technology. That is the scope of their license.įlight is not a part of the MSFS series. Dovetail may create new games that are similar to MSFS, or games that are not similar to MSFS. The misleading info from gamespot is that Dovetail has not received the rights to continue the MSFS series or Flight. The rest of the article is pretty misleading.
#FSX GOLD EDITION VS STEAM EDITION UPDATE#
The definitive info is in the Update section. Personally, I've never tried / used MS Flight, but saw this mentioned as an option for users: Oh, and regarding the future of MS "Flight", be 'forewarned': And for those that haven't yet "had their fill of Phil" (Spencer), IIUC also responsible for promotion of MS "Games" on the PC platform: As you may know, GameSpy is no longer available and so we are looking for alternate ways of providing this functionality including using features in Steam."īTW: 'MSFS' = "Microsoft Flight Simulator" One area that will require some work is the use that FSX made use of GameSpy for multiplayer features. However, we will include all possible bug fixes we can. Dovetail told GameSpot, "We have the license to re-release FSX on Steam and this does not extend to making product improvements. " Update: Unfortunately, it doesn't sound as if the Steam Edition of Flight Simulator X will feature any improvements.
